Library MVI / Resources for Students
Welcome to the John and Doris Campbell Library. Completed in 2002, the Library supports scholarship and research by providing both physical and digital access to information.

Library Catalog
The Monteverde Institute is in currently in the process of making its Library Catalog available as a public online catalog.  Please continue to check this web site for updates.  Meanwhile, the Library Catalog resides in a FileMaker Pro database, and assistance is required to use it.  For assistance using the Library Catalog, or for questions about the Library's holdings, please contact Marlene Campbell: campbell@mvinstitute.org or MVI Contact Center

 
 

Public Databases

 

Google Scholar provides an interface to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations.

The National Bibliography in Tropical Biology (BINABITROP) is a database that contains the references of more than 31,000 publications on environmental information that focuses on or mentions Costa Rica.  These publications can be books, theses, book chapters, journal articles, communications to congresses, symposiums, or workshops.




MetaBase provides access to bibliographic resources from institutions in Central America and Mexico.




Database of Costa Rican agricultural information/ statistics

Searchable database of Costa Rican species. Scientific information for each species is presented. Included are photos and illustrations, information about natural history, conservation and demography, distribution, importance for humankind, taxonomy, and references. Almost all the information is written in Spanish.



A searchable reference of conservation projects in the Neotropics, with goals, achievements, lessons learned, interviews, and more.



Conservation and educational resource on the birds, mammals, and amphibians of Latin America and the Caribbean

IngentaConnect is an index with abstracts to articles in over 20,000 scholarly journal publications. Once you have selected articles of interest, check with library staff  for access options.

Social and Human Sciences Online Periodicals (full text) -- Free access to specialized articles from about 700 periodicals in the Social and Human Sciences


Revista de Biologia Tropical: International Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation -- issues from 2000-2005 are freely available online; issues from 2006 are available by subscription only or by purchasing single issues; indices from 1953-200 are available online.


Public Library of Science -- a non-profit organization of scientists  and physicians committed to making the world's scientific literature a freely available public resource. Everything published by PLoS is freely available online.


PubMed Central -- a free archive of life sciences journals, organized by the U.S. National Instititute of Health.



FreeFullText.com -- provides links to over 7,000 scholarly periodicals, which allow some or all of their online content to be viewed by anyone with Internet access, for free (though some may require free registration.)



HighWire Press -- 1,619,648 free full-text articles as of 3/20/07, HighWire Press at Stanford University develops and maintains the Web versions of important journals in biomedicine and other disciplines. They advertise themselves as the largest archive of free, full-text science on earth.


Directory of Open Access Journals
-- This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. Coverage includes all subjects and languages. There are now 2603 journals in the directory. Currently 783 journals are searchable at article level.


Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences -- no subscription required to access Tables of Contents, abstracts, full text searching, and the full text of articles that are more than 6 months old, from 1915 - present.
