The Monteverde Institute offers tailor-made Spanish language programs for our courses or on an individual basis. For more information contact Cristina Rubio, Spanish lead language instructor, at crubiorey@mvinstitute.org
Language instruction at the Monteverde Institute uses the Communicative Approach to language acquisition. In this method, the goal is for learners to be able to rapidly use the language appropriately in given social contexts. The classroom is student-centered, and the four skills (comprehension, speaking, reading and writing), are all utilized in different in-class and out-of-class exercises and projects. From the very beginning, students learn to think and express themselves in Spanish.
To begin to acquire an understanding of social context, students will have opportunities to discuss local culture in their classes and include cultural observations as part of their homework assignments. On a larger scale, we hope to promote global awareness and tolerance through the sharing of cultures. We believe that participation in our course teaches not only a new language, but also effective tools for communication and understanding in our constantly evolving global culture.
What's Included ?
Every student receives substantial personalized attention. We offer you an immersion experience in the local community, which provides the best opportunities to use what you have been learning in class, and learn not only the language, but our way of life. We also offer you special lectures on Environmental and Cultural History in Monteverde, and Costa Rican History, and Community Development in Rural Costa Rica. Other local cultural activities include film nights, cooking Traditional Costa Rican meals, Latin dance classes and much more.
During your visit, we arrange a homestay with a local Costa Rican family. This experience will definitely help you to develop language skills more quickly and the cultural exchange will enrich the learning experience.
